What constitutes an information resource?

How is an information resource defined? Do we define it by how it’s used? Does is help to think of information as a resource and dismiss the seeker?

Work groups as collections? Is a work group an information resource?

Between you, me and this blog, I sure hope it is. It would support the hope behind my Moonlighting as a Student.

This crystallized in my head after classes yesterday. I’m driving home excited about the ideas and the promise of discovery hinted at in lecture and discussions.

The study and use of information from the perspective of librarianship, archivists, and information researchers might provide a pattern that scales. Maybe the approach, the tools that result from and exist in these disciplines might fit some of the Things that Puzzle me.

More on groups as collections….

Studying the mechanics of a group through some time period allows one to record and gather information that can be evaluated and dissected henceforth.

I have to work with and in groups everyday. It gets along fine, sure, we get our work done…mostly. Sometimes in unnecessarily complicated ways though and that is precisely what I want to understand.

The problems are greater than just technical issues though there are technical issues. Though the problems all seem to involve “information”…need it, create it, search it, use it to influence others…literally we could define everything moment of our conscious lives and movement of information. The self watching the self do curious things while trying to guess whats important to it.

But the problems are also integrated with the environment and complex social and political issues all the way from world affairs to our class groups and factoring that in is a part that, to be honest, really confuses me.

So we are going to learn about groups and getting things done in one. This presumes some study and reflection on their informational needs while solving real world problems. To prepare us for this sort of thing later when we are information professionals.

That sounds perfect. What about the guy that won’t talk to anybody?
