Living it up: day 2 and 3

It’s early afternoon here in Hawaii and pouring rain outside. We spent the first part of the day wandering around the resort area enjoying the sites then settled in at the edge a pool. After lunch it started raining and we all headed to our rooms to relax and wait for it to pass.
So I decided to get another blog entry in. I’ve been taking a ton of pictures but don’t have enough time to properly incorporate them into these posts. I’ll get some of the better shots incorporated into an entry when I get back home.
Yesterday we went on a snorkeling trip. We went out on a huge catamaran sail boat to an area up the coast where there was some great snorkeling. We swam around looking at fish and inhaling sea water for about an hour than enjoyed lunch and snacks on the ride back. The wind had picked up a bit so they turned off the engines and unfurled one of the sails. That was totally awesome. So quiet and nice just coasting along. We had a great time.
W. is sitting on our terrace reading her book. The huge slider is open to the outside and I can hear the rain coming down on the palm trees. Even when it’s raining, Hawaii is paradise for the eyes.
On our walk around the lagoon today we got to watch a couple sea turtles foraging for food along the rocks. One of them was bigger than a garbage can lid. Sea turtles are cool.
We were walking back from dinner the other night and went by where the dolphins live. We could hear them swimming around and breathing. I wondered whether dolphins sleep. Whilst wandering around there today I asked one of the women that work with the dolphins weather they sleep. She said that they are unusual in that they half sleep. What they do is let one half of their brain sleep while the other half makes sure they don’t drown or get into some sort of trouble. She said they’ll sort of idle very slowly or go to the shallows and drift to the surface every so often to get a breath then sink back down. I found this fascinating. Getting rest but staying conscious. What a great idea.
Image: I took this picture last night from where I was sitting for dinner. The sun was just setting but it was real cloudy so you can’t really tell. The restaurant is right on the ocean and we ate outside. Beautiful and enchanting but it doesn’t come cheap. Expect to be fleeced if you visit Hawaii.
