Heuristically evaluating

I spent a good part of the evening in my basement office working on assignments that are due this week. A little space heater keeps that side of me warm so its not all bad.

We are evaluating a new version of the system that students use to pre-register and register for classes every semester. This week we have to put together a “heuristic evaluation.” This consists of each member in the group exploring the application and trying to identify things that violate one of 101 heuristics as identified through considerable research by Jakob Nielsen et. al.

But that is boring as hell. I know this and I feel bad even writing about it. I know you’re all thinking that this is just a way to legitimize complaining about an interface. To that I would probably agree.

It was bitter cold today. Nostril freezing cold…hurts to breath through your mouth type of cold. Single digits for sure. It was sunny out even, but biting cold. Nice to have a house to keep me warm. Warm cats and W. aren’t so bad either.

Image: Being short of a decent picture I had to take one with materials close at hand. A Buddha statue and an article by Nielsen. Perhaps Buddhism is about heuristics.

  1. Or more…the Pearl Master added a few that really lend themselves to our study. []
