Generalized Transition Networks and Covenants

I spent most of this evening reading for class tomorrow. One article was on how to do generalized transition networks. The term was mentioned in class and I remember thinking when I heard it, “I have no idea what that means.” After reading the article I’m all fired up and want to see if I can use the strategy to explain some of the behavior experienced using the products I’m involved with at work. We’ll see if it happens, but I’m intrigued.

After reading that article on GTN, I read a chapter on conducting research projects on products. This was also very interesting and nicely summarized the reasoning behind why certain things are done when approaching a research project on usability and design. Very pragmatic. This class is going to open my mind up, I can tell.

After that I started some documentation for my group. We need to deliver a project plan in one week and we don’t even know who our client will be. Trying to be prepared I drafted our group covenant that outlines what we will all agree on doing during this project. Like meeting regularly and how we’ll respond to emails. Email response and when one can expect a response is pretty interesting. I did a critique last semester on an article that described the results of a research project that sought to understand the question of when a person should expect an email response. Super nerdy but interesting.

Being January and all, work is in full swing to “get things done” this year. This is well and good but people that are already working hard only need improved focus to deliver more. Improving focus is a tricky thing. Very tricky.
