Summer Cycles

blog_w_in_tcI have this theory time units are actually shorter the longer a person lives. This might make sense mathematically too. Imagine an inverse quadratic seeming, hyperbolic, long tail, logarithmic type equation that proves it. Perception of time can change based on one’s mental state, but that isn’t so interesting.

The cycle of summer is predictably consistent1. And getting shorter. We travel, notice how family and friends get older. We see numerous children getting bigger and start being able to have conversations. The sprinklers run to keep the grass from aching. Bugs are out, barbecues aplenty, runners, bikers, and walkers are everywhere.

This past weekend W and I visited our families in northern Michigan2. W was attending her sister’s baby shower3. We did the coordinated visit thing, running from town to town, dividing and conquering. The visit to my brother’s was fun, and totally unplanned4. One of my nephews says to me, “Uncle Spike! Wow, this is unexpected.” I chuckle thinking about that now and their awareness of it. They were still sleeping when I showed up and their Dad and I headed off to kayak the Elk Rapids river. Ah summertime and blue water.

Been playing a lot of tennis, trying to stay focused on what matters most at work, and generally worrying about things I may or may not have the ability to change. Always trying to figure out if I can do something or not, if I should question or not, is the worrying part. My mind in a gerbil wheel. Have faith one said. And I want to, I do. But I’m not so sure about it sometimes.

Independence Day

July 4th, 2009 7:15 am —  13 views

Today is the Fourth of July, a day commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. It was 233 years ago our fore fathers signed this declaration stating our independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. History suggests they had their reasons.

Today is another day. A Saturday actually. In a moment I’m going to grab a bite to eat then drive over to the high school tennis courts to play some tennis with W.

On my desk are notes for some design work I’m doing, in my head are the swirling interests of domesticacia, in my future are courses, studying, working, and if plan and nature are sufficiently aligned, my own sort of independence some day.

An amusing perspective on the 4th by Russell Brand’s via Twitter the other day:

I am opposed to Independence Day.As an Englishman I think America ought accept that they made an awful mistake and apologise to Her Majesty.”

It’s an interesting perspective that could easily send me down this boring path where I get all philosophical about how technology and independence mean something in these globally aware times…but not today.
