Blogging to learn

I did some more work on the two blog sites mentioned previously. Subdomains are easier to remember. I also scheduled log file processing every so many minutes. You know I’m curious if there is any traffic.

The addresses and usage reports are as follows:

Choice and Learning – http://si502.interspike.com

Search and Retrieval – http://si503.interspike.com
Log Report

Maybe you’re wondering what I’m thinking could happen with these blogs? Basically, its about forcing oneself to review and rehearse (through typing) the main ideas behind our readings. Maybe you have some comments about an assignment or something about the lectures or sections that would be worth sharing for the benefit of those in the class.

This blog will be worthless if nobody knows about it. If people learn about it, they have to have a reason to participate. If they intelligent student perspectives on the readings and lectures, it would be yet another way of rehearsing this stuff. That’s the only way to get it into your head you know.

So I’ll be looking for people to help in two ways. First, I need help writing entries on assignments, readings, lectures and discussion. Ideally the blog entries explore concepts from the course or summarize key points.

Who knows, maybe the GSI’s could be convinced to write 2 entries per the semester. With the number of GSIs, that might be all that’s necessary. A summary of the week and some questions to get us all thinking.

At the very least it’s a place for me to rehearse and learn.

The next two classes

Like many of my fellow students, I am taking two core classes this semester. These classes all SI students must take regardless of discipline. You can imagine this makes for some diversity in interests and understanding.

Adhereing to some inner idea I have of contextuality combined with my goal to connect people, information, and technology (sound familiar?), I’ve gone ahead and started blogs for both of those classes. We’ll see if I can make some connections through some investment of time and attention to provide weekly starter content.

The classes are “SI 502 – Choice and Learning” and “SI 503 – Search and Retrieval“. Being named so similarly is confusing many. What class is this we were saying to each other at the begging of classes yesterday. It was the first day back for many.
